An exceptionally light writers retreat

The brief

Our client, an author who loves to travel, wanted a peaceful, light-filled space where she could feel inspired to write, as well as a home where she and her husband could live year-round and entertain friends. It was a priority that their houseboat should be very warm in the winter and cool in the summer, with a few key requirements including a full-sized bath and an excellent wine fridge. Having spent a lot of time sailing and living close to the water, the couple also wanted to incorporate nautical features and plenty natural wood finishes throughout the design.

The design

Saloon / Galley

The design of the galley took some time to perfect and finished result is both practical and beautiful. The open-plan layout of the galley and saloon creates a wonderful sense of space, with the Morsoe wood-burning stove acting as a cosy focal point. The herringbone natural oak flooring adds warmth and character and the addition of porthole windows and duck doors give the interior a traditional feel.

Bedrooms

Natural light was a priority in the writing room, so the clients included a bespoke rooflight, which floods the space with natural light and creates an inspiring environment for writing. A clever day bed provides a comfortable place for occasional visitors to stay in comfort. The master bedroom has a beautiful outlook. The clients were particularly keen to be able to look out from bed and see the sky each morning. With a king-sized bed and plenty of built-in storage, the room feels comfortable and calm.

Bathroom

The bathroom was designed around the beautiful roll-top bath and with the client’s choice of wall tiles and upgraded Crosswater brushed brass brassware, the bathroom feels like a boutique hotel rather than a boat.

Outside Spaces

Our clients love being close to the water, and both the front and back decks have been made wonderfully cosy with their addition of fairy lights, soft furnishings, outdoor plants and other thoughtful touches. These spaces are perfect for enjoying a quiet morning coffee or watching the stars in the evening.

Anna’s Thoughts

This project was a joy to work on. The clients had a lovely vision for creating a calm and inspiring retreat on the water, and we worked closely together to balance practical living with beautiful design details. The abundance of natural light and the thoughtful nautical touches make this boat feel truly special.
