About the marina

Poplar Waterside & Marina is situated in an enviable location next to Canary Wharf and opposite the Millennium Dome. The 90 berth marina is operated by Aquavista – the largest marina operator on Britain’s inland waterways. This modern marina is arguably one of the best-connected marinas in the whole of London and offers a unique way to enjoy waterside life in the capital city.

The gated marina offers residents an excellent array of facilities and services, including 24 hour CCTV, electricity and water provided to each berth, wi-fi, toilets, showers, laundry, pump-out and outside communal space. There’s also a friendly team on hand to help whenever you need them and a regular fuel barge visiting the site.

Nearby Canary Wharf has a wide range of restaurants, cafés and increasingly popular shopping facilities. The tranquil marina benefits from a strong community spirit with an eclectic mix of sea-going vessels, narrowboats and river cruisers.

The local area

Transport

Canary Wharf Jubilee line, DLR and Crossrail (due to open in 2021) are just a short walk away with fast underground and overground connections into the City and Central London. Also within a few minutes’ walk is Blackwall DLR which provides services to the Royal Docks and London City Airport. Canary Wharf also has a river bus stop, where you can board the Thames Clipper services into central and west London.

Shopping

Two excellent shopping offers are provided by Canary Wharf (10 minutes’ walk) and Westfield Shopping Centre in nearby Stratford (16 minutes by DLR or 30 minutes by bus). The Marina is also next to Billingsgate Fish Market and within easy reach of Whitechapel and Greenwich markets.

Entertainment

West India Quay is just 10 minutes’ walk away. As well as a good mix of bars and restaurants, there’s an excellent 10 screen cinema and the Museum of London Docklands.

Canary Wharf hosts a year-round arts and events programme including music performances, light shows and public art installations. Nearby Wood Wharf (currently under development) will create over 9 acres of riverside parklands and gardens.

Another popular walking route is to take the Greenwich Foot Tunnel from Island Gardens beneath the Thames to Greenwich where you can visit the majestic Cutty Sark, Old Royal Observatory and National Maritime Museum.

Cruising

From Poplar, it’s a short cruise on the River Thames and its tributary Bow Creek before you reach the gentle River Lee Navigation in Bow.

Within 30 minutes’ you will arrive at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park where you can take in some iconic Olympic venues or stop for lunch in one of the many waterside restaurants.

Alternatively, cruising the River Thames to the west is a great way to see the capital from a different perspective. Within 3-4 hours, boaters reach Teddington Lock and the start of some beautiful villages and towns along the non-tidal River Thames.

FAQs

We know that buying or selling a waterside or floating home comes with its own unique considerations. Whether you’re curious about the lifestyle, the process, or how we work, here are some of the most common questions we get asked.

How soon can I have a boat?

Some boats are in stock and can be yours immediately. Boats that are built to order take between 10-16 weeks to deliver.

Do I own the mooring?

No, you will pay an annual license fee to the mooring operator for a fixed term agreement of typically between 10-50 years, renewable on an annual basis after that. The fee includes services and facilities at the moorings such as utilities and waste disposal.

How can I learn to drive the boat?

We will give you all the training you need at handover and you can come back to us any time if you need further help. We’ll ensure you are confident with all the systems onboard and how to move your boat. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) offers an Inland Waterway Helmsman Certificate [rya.org.uk].

Do I need special permission to leave the mooring?

It depends where you are moored and where you are going. At Hazlemere Marina, no, you can just untie your ropes and go. From Bramley Falls on the Thames you’ll need to arrange passage through the lock.

What are the running costs I should consider?

Key costs of living on a boat include licence fee, mooring fee, safety certificate (like an MOT), boat maintenance, utilities, council tax and insurance.

Can I get a mortgage for a boat?

There are specialist lenders for marine mortgages. We recommend you deal with a company that is a member of British Marine, the trade federation for the boating industry. Please talk to us if you need a mortgage and we’ll help you with this.

Do I have to pay stamp duty?

No, there is no stamp duty on residential boats.
